BMW i8 India Launch Soon; Imported Into The Country
That the highly futuristic BMW i8 is headed to India is a fact that hasn’t remained hidden from many. The i8 made its India debut at the Auto Expo 2014 in January this year and thanks to a recent development, it now seems that the BMW i8 India launch could happen in the coming months! As the image below reveals, as many as three units of the i8 have been imported into India by the German carmaker’s Indian subsidiary. These cars could have been brought to our shores for homologation purposes, ahead of the i8’s official launch. The declared value of the car has been shown as roughly INR 62 lakhs.
Very soon, this ultra futuristic, carbon-bodied performance car will become the new flagship from BMW India. It is being estimated that the BMW i8 price in India will be around INR 1.5 crores and quite obviously, the car will come to us via CBU route. The i8 will showcase BMW’s technological prowess and will serve as the perfect halo car. We believe that the launch of the i8 will pave way for other hybrid vehicles, such as the BMW i3, to come to our shores.
In India, the BMW’s i brand will co-exist with the manufacturer’s luxury car range and M branded performance models. The i8 is already on sale in international market and has been rather quick in establishing itself in the hybrid car industry. The i8 offers performance that one would associate with a sportscar and yet, has fuel efficiency that is comparable to a small family car. The i8’s electric motor pumps out a maximum power of 357bhp and a peak torque of 58.06 kgm. While these figures don’t sound too exciting, at least not when you compare them with supercar specs, the fact that BMW i8’s carbon-fibre and aluminium construction has led to a really low kerb weight should impress you. For the number hungry, the i8 can hit 100 km/h from standstill in just 4.5 secs!
Our guess is that the BMW i8 India launch will take place in the first quarter of 2015 and the deliveries could commence around May next year. It is being said that only eight units of the i8 have been allocated to our country for the year 2015.
