Tesla Said to Have Flown in New Battery Production Line for Gigafactory

Tesla Said to Have Flown in New Battery Production Line for Gigafactory

Tesla Inc has flown six planes full of robots and equipment from Europe to California in an unusual, high-stakes effort to speed up battery production for its Model 3 electric sedan, people familiar with the matter told Reuters this week.

Transporting equipment for a production line by air is costly and hardly ever done in the automotive industry, and the move underscores Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk's urgency to get a grip on manufacturing problems that have hobbled the launch of the high-volume Model 3 and pushed Tesla's finances deep into the red.

"As usual with Tesla, everything is being done in a massive hurry and money seems to be no obstacle," said one of the two sources.
Tesla on Friday declined to comment on whether it has shipped in any new production equipment from Europe.

Investors are closely watching Tesla and its high-profile, often brash CEO to see if the upstart electric vehicle maker can pull off high-volume production of the Model 3, a car with the potential to catapult the niche automaker to a mass producer and assure its financial stability.
But manufacturing missteps have led Tesla to repeatedly miss production targets for the sedan, and raised doubts about Musk's promises that the company will stop burning cash by the third quarter of this year. Tesla had free cash flow of negative $1 billion in the first quarter, and earlier this month disclosed that it could offer its Fremont, California, vehicle assembly plant as collateral for debt.
Engineers from Tesla's German engineering arm, Grohmann, are now reworking the battery production line at the Gigafactory near Reno, Nevada, in a bid to free up bottlenecks, the person said. The line will become more automated gradually over time, added the source, who was not authorized to speak for attribution.

Musk first disclosed plans for this line on a conference call with analysts in November, after complaining of problems with an original line built by a subcontractor.
Musk has told investors the new battery production line will help the carmaker achieve a quantum leap in productivity. The company has noted, however, that it will still be able to reach its target of building 5,000 Model 3s per week by June without the addition of the new line.

But Tesla's lack of consistency in its factories has undercut Musk's production promises in the past.
Under time pressure to fix problems, Musk has now insisted the new production line should be a no-expenses-spared effort, the source said. That led to the decision to airlift the new production equipment to the United States from Europe, a step carmakers usually avoid by planning production equipment installations months or years ahead of a production launch.

The shipments of new equipment began arriving in Reno this week, the two sources told Reuters.
It is not clear when the new production system will be ready to start running. Robots frequently need to be recalibrated to adjust for minimal differences in the quality of raw materials they are working with or temperature and humidity differences. Steps to test the quality of materials and recalibrate robots have proven to be a bottleneck that Tesla managers had underestimated, the first source said.
Musk has repeatedly complained of "manufacturing hell" trying to ramp up the Model 3, which began production, albeit slowly, last July.

In February, Musk said the main bottleneck was still its battery module production, saying Tesla had become "a little overconfident, a little complacent" in its ability to execute.
The Gigafactory's battery production is divided into four zones, two of which have experienced problems. Responsibility for two of these zones was originally delegated to subcontractors specialised in integrating complex systems, Musk said.

"We were promised they would work, and it just didn't work," Musk said during a February conference call. A new design for an automated system for those zones was nearing completion, Musk said in November, adding that Grohmann was "working on the issue and making very rapid progress."
One of the problems, both at the Gigafactory and at Tesla's Fremont vehicle manufacturing factory, has been the interface between Tesla and the subcontractors it hires. Sources have told Reuters of communication problems and high managerial turnover, which complicate the execution of big projects.

Musk said in early May he planned to rid the company of "barnacles" – contractors and subcontractors – saying Tesla's reliance on them had become "out of control."

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 With Exynos 9810 SoC Spotted on Geekbench

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 With Exynos 9810 SoC Spotted on Geekbench

Highlights

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Exynos variant spotted on Geekbench
  • The handset appears to have 6GB of RAM, Android 8.1 Oreo
  • It has better scores over the Snapdragon 845 variant
Galaxy Note 9 based on Exynos 9810 system-on-chip (SoC) has now been spotted on Geekbench. The fresh development emerges weeks after the US variant of the upcoming Galaxy Note model surfaced on the benchmarking site showing off its performance with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. The Galaxy Note 9 handset is expected to debut at IFA 2018 in late August. Similar to the past Galaxy Note series handsets, the new model is likely to come in both Exynos and Snapdragon SoC options.

The listing spotted on Geekbench shows the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 variant with model number SM-N960N. This new model, unlike its US counterpart that is said to have the model number SM-N960U, has the Exynos 9810 SoC coupled with 6GB of RAM. The listing also highlights that there is Android 8.1 Oreo, which is likely to have the newest version of Samsung Experience on top.

In terms of benchmark scores, the Exynos SoC-powered Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has received a single-core score of 2,737, while its multi-core score reached 9,064. These are notably higher than the scores received by the US variant of the Galaxy Note 9. The US variant got 2,190 single-core score and 8,806 multi-core score back in March. However, it made another entry on Geekbench just earlier this month with the slightly better single-core score at 2,411, while its multi-core score dipped marginally to 8,712.

If we believe the recent rumours, the Galaxy Note 9 will feature a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display along with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio and include a 4000mAh battery. Some initial reports claimed that the new Galaxy Note model will come with an in-display fingerprint sensor, though there are speculations that Samsung could ultimately consider a traditional rear-facing fingerprint sensor. It is also expected to feature Bixby 2.0. Furthermore, the support page of the Galaxy Note 9 already emerged on Samsung's North Africa and South Africa websites to formally confirm its existence.

Nation should ensure digital space does not become playground of dark forces: PM Narendra Modi

Nation should ensure digital space does not become playground of dark forces:PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the nation should ensure that digital space does not become a playground of dark forces.

"Cyber attacks are significant threat to the global community. We need to ensure that the vulnerable section of the society does not fall prey to it," Modi said while addressing at the inaugural session of the fifth edition of the Global Conference on Cyber Space (GCCS).

He further said the major focus area should be to build cyber warriors who will remain alert for the miscreants.

The theme of the two-day GCCS conference is Cyber4All: A Secure and Inclusive Cyberspace for Sustainable Development.

Saying that internet has provided 'ease of living' to Indians, Modi added: "Empowerment through digital access is an objective that the Indian government is focused on."

"We believe in mobile power or M-power to empower our citizens," he added.

The Prime Minister said financial inclusion through Jan Dhan Yojna, unique identification through Aadhaar and mobile phones have helped to reduce corruption and bring in transparency in the country.

Regarding India's IT talent pool, Modi said: "Indian IT talent has been recognised worldwide. Indian IT companies have made name for themselves. Women form significant part of IT workforce and the IT sector contributed to gender empowerment."

He also added that technology breaks barriers and silos.

Incepted in 2011 in London, the second GCCS was held in 2012 in Budapest with focus on relationship between internet rights and internet security, which was attended by 700 delegates from nearly 60 countries. The third edition of GCCS was held in 2013 in Seoul with commitment to Open and Secure Cyberspace. The fourth version GCCS 2015 was held in 2015 in The Hague, Netherlands which saw participation from 97 countries.

Earlier the government said the GCCS 2017 is going to be four times bigger than its previous edition in terms of its magnitude. The last conference held in The Netherlands saw about 1,800 delegates, and this year over 10,000 delegates participated in person. There is also be virtual participation from over 2,800 locations across the world.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also participated in the event.

Track-Only Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro Revealed, All 25 Units Sold Out

Track-Only Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro Revealed, All 25 Units Sold Out

Aston Martin has pulled the covers off the Valkyrie AMR Pro, a track-only evolution of the most extreme Aston Martin in history. The Valkyrie AMR Pro, as the company states, has been developed in parallel with the road car, but is freed from the constraints and considerations of road use.
The brainchild of Adrian Newey and the product of the collaboration between Aston Martin, Red Bull Advanced Technologies and project partner AF Racing, just 25 units of the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro will be built. Deliveries are expected in 2020. And just so you know, all these units have been accounted for.

Changes to the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro’s exterior include revised aerodynamic surfaces for significantly increased downforce and the addition of much larger front and rear wing elements, together with revised active aerodynamic control strategies tailored for the demands of track driving.
The hypercar’s 6.5-litre Cosworth-built NA V12 engine develops more power and torque when compared to the ‘standard’ model. The boost in figures can be attributed to a significant engine recalibration and the modification of the road car’s emission control systems. The output of the Rimac Energy Recovery System remains unchanged, but its control systems will be re-programmed.
The AMR Pro runs on wheels of a smaller diameter than the road car (18 inch front and rear) in order to facilitate the fitment of Michelin racing tyres, which are made to the same specification as those used by LMP1 cars in the World Endurance Championship. The AMR Pro also features F1 inspired race-spec carbon-carbon brakes as their performance characteristics are perfectly suited to the extremes of track use.

The opportunity has also been taken to make further weight savings, both through the removal of extraneous items such as the heater/de-mister blower and infotainment screens fitted to the road car, and through the fitment of new ultra-lightweight track-specific components. These include polycarbonate windscreen (with heater elements) and side windows, a lighter construction of carbon fibre bodywork, new suspension uprights and carbon fibre wishbones, plus moulded race seats in place of the adjustable road car items. The AMR Pro’s exhaust system will also be lighter than that fitted to the road car due to the minimal silencing requirements.
This hypercar will have a top speed close to the 402 kmph mark, coupled to the ability to sustain cornering forces in excess of 3.3g and braking deceleration of more than 3.5g. According to Red Bull Technology’s extensive simulation work, the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro will be capable of achieving lap times to rival those of a contemporary F1 or LMP1 car – a pace previously unthinkable in a car derived from a fully homologated road car.
Given the car’s capabilities, Valkyrie AMR Pro customers will be taken through an intensive and comprehensive driver development programme. Tailored to their individual experience and skill levels, owners will have access to the same facilities as Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s F1 drivers. This includes time in the simulator and professional on-track tuition, plus programmes to improve their physical fitness. They will then be able to enjoy their cars to the full with a series of dedicated track events held at some of the world’s best race tracks.
